Your first motorcycle trackday
You are looking at your first trackday. The day is practice on a closed circuit, in groups, with a briefing. It is not a race. You do not need slicks or race pace.
What is a trackday?
A trackday is a day on a closed circuit. You ride in a group that matches your pace. Instructors are there if you want feedback. Nobody is scoring you.
Before the first session there is a briefing. You hear the flags and the rules of this organiser. Then the groups go out one after another.
What you actually need
On your body, this is the kit that matters. Everything for the bag and the paddock box is on the packing list.
- Helmet
- Suit
- Gloves
- Boots
- Back protector
Prepare the bike
Check mirrors and the number plate against the organiser’s rules. Set the chain, and check the tyres still have tread. Do not strip the bike just in case.
Tyre pressure listHow the day runs
Sign on first, then the briefing. The opening laps are outlaps: you learn the circuit, not the time.
Flags apply from the first lap. There are breaks between sessions. Stop when you are tired or the session is over.
Afterwards
Check the chain, walk around the bike, and write down your first lap time. Then you know what to compare next time.
Create an account and log a timeNo. For a first trackday, tyres with tread that the organiser allows are enough.
Yes, if they have tread and the organiser allows them. Ask when you sign up.
The organiser sets the limit, often together with the circuit.
Stay put and follow the flags from the briefing. The organiser runs the session. What happens next is in their rules.
