About the circuit
The Salzburgring is a permanent motorsport circuit in the Nesslgraben between Koppl and Plainfeld, east of Salzburg in Austria. Construction began in 1968, and the track opened in September 1969 — at the same time as the original Österreichring. The site is owned by the State of Salzburg and operated by the Internationaler Gemeinnütziger Motorsportverein Salzburgring (IGMS).
The lap is 4.255 kilometres long, run clockwise, and has twelve corners: six left and six right. Two long straights, the slightly uphill back straight and the long Fahrerlagerkurve make it a fast circuit. Typical sections include the Bridgestone chicane after start/finish, the Nockstein hairpin, the back straight, the Fahrerlagerkurve and the Reiner S chicane before the pit straight. The start/finish straight is about 750 metres, and the elevation change is around 25 metres.
The first motorcycle Grand Prix of Austria was held here in 1970. From 1971 to 1994 the Salzburgring was a regular venue for the FIM motorcycle World Championship. The track also hosted European Formula Two races — including Jochen Rindt’s last race on 30 August 1970 — and later the World Touring Car Championship and TCR. Today clubs, manufacturers and drivers use the ring for track days, testing, driver-training courses and presentations. Natural grandstands above the circuit give a clear view of both straights and the Fahrerlagerkurve.
